Muga Reserva 2021 is a benchmark Rioja from Bodegas Muga, based in the historic Barrio de la Estaci*n in Haro, Rioja. Built predominantly around Tempranillo with Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano, it combines the traditional character of Rioja with impressive freshness, polish and structure. Muga remains unusual in maintaining its own cooperage, giving the winery considerable control over the oak used for maturation.
The 2021 Reserva was fermented in wooden vats before spending 24 months in oak barrels 80% French and 20% American oak, followed by a minimum of 12 months ageing in bottle before release. The result is classic Rioja done properly: generous fruit, savoury complexity and noticeable oak influence without losing freshness.
The 2021 vintage has also attracted significant critical acclaim, making this an especially strong release of Muga Reserva. Tasting Notes Colour: Bright ruby red with medium depth and subtle garnet tones developing around the rim. Nose: Expressive blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry lead into layers of sweet spice, cedar, subtle balsamic notes and polished oak.
Palate: Medium-to-full bodied and beautifully balanced, with ripe dark fruit, fresh acidity and fine, supple tannins. The fruit and oak are well integrated, with spice and savoury notes adding complexity rather than overpowering the wine. Finish: Long, elegant and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice and fine-grained tannin.
Awards & Accolades The 2021 is a particularly decorated vintage: 94 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate94 Points Jeb Dunnuck93 Points James Suckling92 Points Vinous92 Points Wine Spectator Most notably, Wine Spectator named Muga Reserva 2021 its 2025 Wine Value of the Year, highlighting the wine's combination of quality, regional character, availability and value.
Food Pairing: Excellent with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, charcuterie, slow-cooked casseroles and mature cheeses. Muga itself specifically recommends dishes such as ribeye steak. Cellaring: Drinking beautifully now, but there is plenty of structure and balance here for further bottle development.
